Did you know that an estimated 80% of pets have significant problems affecting their dental health? Animal dentistry is an often overlooked aspect of at home pet care. Similar to human dentistry, over time, our beloved pets can develop plaque and tarter on their teeth that can lead to redness, inflammation, infections, abscesses, and other life-threatening conditions if not addressed. The toxins from your pet's mouth are absorbed into the bloodstream and can carry dangerous infections to the brain, kidneys, heart, and liver.
At North Main Animal Hospital, we offer complete dental care programs by examining your pet's mouth at every wellness exam, and offering dental prophylaxis procedures. A dental prophylaxis consists of a complete oral examination and cleaning under a general anesthetic. Plaque and tartar are removed with ultrasonic scalers, and any diseased teeth are extracted by your veterinarian. The teeth are polished with fluoride paste and the mouth is rinsed. The entire procedure typically lasts about an hour.
The time between dental cleanings varies with each pet, with most pets requiring a cleaning every 12 to 24 months.
